Exploring the Sormiou Calanque by boat

Why choose to arrive by sea?

Sormiou translates to "the best spring" (from the Provençal Sormiou), named after the freshwater aquifer that once supplied local fishermen. While the calanque can be reached via winding roads and steep trails, a maritime approach remains the only way to truly capture its majesty without the terrestrial constraints.

Did you know? While hiking requires 60 minutes of walking under the scorching sun, our speedboat drops you into the heart of turquoise waters in just 25 minutes from the Port de la Pointe Rouge—even when the forest massifs are closed due to fire hazards.

Navigation and anchoring in Sormiou

  • Anchoring conditions: Sormiou is a wide but shallow calanque. We prioritize sandy areas for anchoring to avoid damaging the Posidonia seagrass, the "lungs of the Mediterranean," which is clearly visible thanks to the water's crystal clarity.
  • Weather protection: exposed to east winds, Sormiou offers excellent shelter during moderate Mistral winds. However, the area can become choppy in heavy weather. Your captain always adjusts the itinerary to ensure your comfort and a safe swimming experience.

The "cabanons" and the art of living

  • Authentic Cabanons: these small fishermen's huts, without running water or electricity, are a testament to an ancestral way of life. Passed down from generation to generation, they form a village community unique in the world.
  • The "Château": you will notice a more imposing building overlooking the beach. Built in 1894 by Marie de Sormiou, a poet and local icon, it is nicknamed "the Castle" by the residents.
  • History and Cinema: Sormiou is the birthplace of modern diving. It was here that Commander Cousteau and Georges Beuchat made their first scuba immersions in 1942. This stunning backdrop has also captivated filmmakers, serving as a set for movies such as The Connection (La French) or The Witnesses.
