Morgiou Calanque by boat

Why choose to arrive by sea?

Morgiou is one of the few inhabited calanques with a still-active fishing port. While land access is possible via a paved road, it is subject to extremely strict traffic restrictions and is often congested during the summer season. A maritime approach is the only way to enter this deep fjord from the perspective of old-time fishermen, all while avoiding parking complications and traffic jams.

Did you know? Unlike car access, which can be blocked by National Park quotas, our speedboat drops you in the heart of this marine village in just 45 minutes from Marseille’s Old Port or 35 minutes from Pointe Rouge.

Navigation and anchoring

  • Anchoring conditions: due to port activity and underwater cables, anchoring is strictly regulated. We prioritize specific areas at the entrance of the calanque, over sandy bottoms, or in front of the Blue Cave, to respect the Posidonia seagrass and avoid interfering with the traditional "pointus" boats.
  • Weather protection: thanks to its orientation and high cliffs, Morgiou offers one of the best shelters in the massif against the Mistral. It is a preferred refuge where the water often remains calm even when the wind blows across the bay of Marseille.

The "Cabanons" and the Art of Living

  • An ancestral fishing port: unlike Sormiou, Morgiou has historically been focused on professional fishing. You will still see "pointus," typical Marseille boats, whose owners perpetuate centuries-old fishing techniques.
  • The Blue Cave (la Grotte Bleue): located on the eastern side of the calanque, this sea cave is truly accessible only by sea. Its unreal light and azure reflections make it one of Morgiou's hidden gems that we will help you discover from the deck.
  • Heritage and history: Morgiou is famous for hosting King Louis XIII in 1622, who came to witness a "madrague" (traditional tuna fishing). More recently, the calanque gained fame with the discovery of the Cosquer Cave, whose prehistoric entrance lies 37 meters below the surface, just a few cable lengths from the port, in the Calanque de la Triperie.

Frequently Asked Questions

The replica (Villa Méditerranée) is located at the Vieux-Port where some of our cruises depart, but at sea, we pass exactly in front of the original submerged tunnel entrance, located beneath the Pointe de la Triperie. Our skippers, National Park experts, will point out the exact location of this world-unique archaeological treasure, to which access is strictly reserved for scientists.

Absolutely! Thanks to the maneuverability of our motorboats and catamarans, we get as close as possible to the cliff to let you discover the Blue Cave. When weather conditions permit, this passage offers an unforgettable light show—one of the best-kept secrets of the Morgiou massif that our captains love to share.

Yes, and it's one of the highlights of the tour. We enter the heart of the Calanque to offer you a panoramic view of its authentic small fishing port and historic 'cabanons'. It is from the deck of our boats that you can best capture the soul of this timeless fishing village, nestled between the limestone walls.

To maintain the flow of your tour and respect National Park regulations, we do not schedule landings on the quay. However, we stay stationary in the Calanque long enough for you to admire the local life and take photos, before heading to a wild mooring spot for an open-water swim.
